WHEN FAITH GETS QUIET
“Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief” – Mark 9:24 (NIV)
Have you ever noticed how loud life can become? Bills demand your attention. Relationships require your energy. Deadlines continue to pile up. Doctor's appointments replace vacations. The phone rings with news you never wanted to hear. Before long, the noise around you becomes so overwhelming that it begins to drown out the voice of God. Then something happens that every believer experiences but very few like to admit. Your faith gets quiet. Notice, I didn't say your faith disappears. I didn't say you stop believing. I didn't say you've turned your back on God. I simply said your faith gets...quiet. There is a difference. There are seasons when your prayers don't sound as confident as they once did. The Scriptures you used to quote effortlessly suddenly require more intentionality. Worship doesn't feel as effortless as it once did. You still show up to church. You still bow your head before meals. You still pray before bed. But somewhere beneath the routine, you quietly wonder, "God, are You still there?"
If you've ever asked that question, welcome to the company of faithful people throughout Scripture.
David asked it.
Job asked it.
Elijah asked it.
Even John the Baptist, sitting in prison after faithfully preparing the way for Jesus, sent messengers asking, "Are You the One who is to come, or should we expect someone else?" (Matthew 11:3). If giants of the faith wrestled with moments of uncertainty, why do we convince ourselves that questioning means we've failed God? It doesn't. Sometimes quiet faith is still genuine faith.
One of my favorite stories in Scripture is found in Mark chapter 9. A desperate father brought his son to Jesus after watching him suffer for years. The disciples had already tried to help, but nothing changed. Imagine the disappointment. Imagine arriving with hope only to leave with more questions. Then the father stood before Jesus and uttered one of the most honest prayers recorded in the Bible:
"I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief."
I've come to appreciate that prayer because it reminds me that faith and struggle can exist in the same heart.
He wasn't pretending.
He wasn't performing.
He wasn't trying to impress Jesus with polished words.
He simply told the truth.
"I believe...
...but I'm struggling."
What a freeing reminder for every believer. God isn't offended by honest faith. He welcomes it.
I think one of the greatest misconceptions in Christianity is that mature believers never struggle.
That's simply not true. Mature believers know where to take their struggle. When your faith grows quiet, don't run from God. Run to Him. When you don't understand His hand, trust His heart. When His voice seems distant, cling to His Word. When your emotions fluctuate, remember that His character never changes. Because faith has never been built upon feelings. Faith has always been built upon God's faithfulness. There have been moments in my own life when I couldn't explain what God was doing. Prayers seemed unanswered. Doors closed without explanation. Opportunities disappeared. People I trusted disappointed me. There were days when worship felt harder than usual. Not because God had changed. But because life had become heavy. Perhaps you've experienced seasons like that too. You smiled in public while silently asking questions in private. You encouraged everyone else while wondering who would encourage you. You kept serving even while your own heart was tired. If that's where you are today, I want you to know something. God is not intimidated by your silence. Sometimes faith whispers before it shouts again. Think about a campfire. When the flames disappear, someone unfamiliar with fire may assume it has gone out. But if you look closely beneath the ashes, you'll often discover glowing embers. They're quiet. They're not impressive. They don't command attention. Yet with one breath of fresh air, the fire begins to burn again. I believe that's what the Holy Spirit does for us. There are seasons when our faith feels more like glowing embers than blazing flames. Yet God gently breathes on what we thought had died. Hope returns. Joy returns. Peace returns. Strength returns. Not because we manufactured them. Because He remained faithful. Maybe your faith feels quiet today. Don't mistake silence for absence. The Teacher is still teaching. The Shepherd is still leading. The Father is still watching. The Savior is still interceding. The Holy Spirit is still working in places you cannot yet see. One day you'll look back and realize God was carrying you during the very season you thought He had left you.
Until then...
Keep praying.
Keep worshiping.
Keep trusting.
Keep walking.
Even quiet faith can move mountains when it is placed in the hands of a faithful God.
Say This Declaration with Me
Father, thank You that You are faithful even when my faith feels weak. When my heart grows weary and my confidence begins to fade, remind me that Your promises never change. Help me to trust You when I cannot trace You. Strengthen me when I feel discouraged, steady me when I begin to doubt, and breathe fresh life into every area where my faith has grown quiet. I believe that You are still working, even when I cannot see it. Today I choose to trust Your character over my circumstances, Your Word over my worries, and Your presence over my feelings. I declare that my faith will not fail because You will never fail me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
